1/29 Using Light

Check out the picture I chose by Yousuf Karsh. This image stood out among the others because of the dynamic between the two subjects. I think that it shows action and engages the viewer by making them wonder what the relationship between the two is and what she may be saying to make him smile.  The lighting also plays a huge role in the interest of this photo. The kicker light highlights the man’s face and makes him look human. This side light serves as the principle source. It is slightly backlit to create a highlight around the shape of their heads. It also helps keep their dark hair and his dark suit from blending into the background. The fill light then creates a soft illumination, allowing for the character in the subject’s face to show. By using so few lights and letting the shadows create a human look, the photo becomes much more engaging. I think that even in person, wrinkles and flaws show a personality. Karsh’s concept of using lighting to show his subject’s personality makes for images that draw your attention and create depth of interest. His photos beg you to look harder and consider what the subjects are supposed to portray.

I would have to agree with you on the way you described this photo. The lighting truely does play a big role in the emotions for this photo. I also choose this photo and after reading what you wrote, more detail was brought to my attention.
